An angel leans out of cloud and blows a trumpet with a white banner and a red cross hanging from it. Below, figures stand up out of open grey coffins on water with their arms raised. Snow mountains lie low on the horizon behind them.

They are standing because they chose to. The trumpet sounded a long time before this moment in the picture. Nothing is going to lift you out of this. You heard it some time ago, and the standing is the part that belongs to you.

Four things people go to on this card

  1. their arms

You went to the figures below. Every pair of arms is up, and nothing in the picture is doing the lifting.

An answer rather than a summons. Everybody in the picture got up without being touched. No hand comes down out of the cloud to take anybody by the wrist.

So the card is the moment of responding to something that has been audible for a while. Which means the sound is not the news. You have been hearing this for months, in the way people hear things they have not yet answered, and the only new thing available today is the answer.

What have you been hearing for a while that you have not answered?

  2. the coffins

The boxes are what you looked at. Grey, open, floating on water, with people standing up out of them.

The thing you were in is visible now that you are out of it. The coffins have not been taken away. They are open, on the water, under everybody's feet, in the same picture as the rising.

Which is the specific mercy of this card. Nobody has to pretend the years in the box did not happen; they are in the frame and they are being stood on, and standing on a thing requires it to be there. Whatever you were inside, you can describe it from outside now. That is new, and it is worth using.

What were you in that you can now describe from the outside?

  3. the trumpet

The trumpet took you, with its white banner and red cross, and the angel's eyes are on the people rather than the instrument.

A sound that reaches everybody at once. It is not a private message and it was not addressed; every figure in the picture is hearing the same note at the same volume.

Which is the part worth checking. If something has become clear to you lately, it does not follow that it has become clear to anybody else, and this card is where people make that mistake, because the clarity feels public from inside. Say it out loud to the person it concerns. Assume they have not heard it.

What is obvious to you now that you have assumed is obvious to everybody?

  4. the mountains

You went to the far distance. Snow mountains, low on the horizon, behind the water.

Something cold and unmoved has been put a long way behind a scene of everybody getting up. The mountains were there before the trumpet and they will be there after it, at the same height.

This is the second to last card of the sequence and it is not the end. The mountains are the reminder that the world this happens in carries on being the world. After your thing settles, most of the furniture will be where it was. Decide now what you want that to mean.

After this settles, what will be exactly the same as it was?

On the Tree of Life, Judgement is the thirty-first path, Shin, from Hod to Malkuth, in the Golden Dawn's attribution (Liber 777).
