Upright, then reversed, as Waite gave them in 1910.

Press a mark. Pamela Colman Smith, 1909. Scan in the public domain.

A woman kneels with one knee on the land and the other foot resting on the water, pouring from two jugs, one into the pool and one onto the ground. One large eight-pointed star above her with seven small ones round it. A bird sits in the tree behind.

After the fire, nothing is asked of her. She is not being tested, and she has not put her weight on the water. Nobody wants anything from you in this one. That is harder to sit in than being needed.

Four things people go to on this card

  1. the jugs

You went to the jugs. One pours into the pool, one onto the ground, and both are still going.

Giving in two directions at once, and neither of them is at a person. One goes to the water, one goes to the earth, and nothing in the frame says thank you.

This is the card of the wide circle rather than the near one. Whatever is going out of you at the moment is not aimed at anybody in particular, and that is not a waste, although it will feel like one on a day when you want to be thanked by name. Keep pouring. Stop watching for the reply.

What are you putting out at the moment that is not aimed at any one person?

  2. her knee

How she is kneeling is what you noticed. One knee on the land, one foot resting on the water.

Very light contact with something that will not hold weight. Her foot is on the water rather than in it, nothing is being tested, and no part of her is committed to the surface.

This is the card straight after the Tower, and that is the whole context for the posture. It is the moment of not yet putting weight on anything, and the card treats that as correct rather than cowardly. You are not ready to stand on this. For now that is the right call, and it does not need defending.

What are you not putting your weight on yet, and is that the right call for now?

  3. the big star

You went up to the big one. Eight points, gold, with seven white stars around it.

A fixed point that nobody has to maintain. It is not a lamp somebody is carrying and not a fire somebody is feeding. It is up there, and it will be up there tomorrow whatever happens here tonight.

That is the whole of the consolation on offer, and the picture does not oversell it. No warmth, no rescue, no instructions. A thing that stays where it is. Work out what in your life has not moved through any of this, and then say plainly what you owe it.

What has stayed exactly where it was through all of this?

  4. the bird

The bird in the tree is what you found. Small, on the right, easy to miss altogether.

One small living thing that is not the woman. An ibis in the tradition, sitting in a tree, doing nothing at all: not singing, not flying, not part of the action.

The card is very quiet and this is the quietest thing in it. Something else is present, unhurried, not helping. Some situations need exactly that and nothing more, and the person providing it usually does not know they are doing anything. Somebody has been that for you lately. They have not been thanked, because it does not look like help.

Who has simply been present through this without trying to help?

On the Tree of Life, The Star is the twenty-eighth path, Tzaddi, from Netzach to Yesod, in the Golden Dawn's attribution (Liber 777).
