Eight cups stacked five along the bottom and three above, with a gap where a ninth would sit. A figure in a red cloak walks away uphill, past a dark crag. A moon with a face watches him go.

What he is leaving was not a failure. The cups are well made and stacked with care, and the only thing wrong with them is the gap. He is not looking back. The moon is. If you are leaving something that works, the card does not think you owe anybody an account of it.

Four things people go to on this card

  1. the gap

You went to the gap first. Eight cups, arranged so that a ninth would complete them, and it is missing.

Leaving something nearly right is the hardest leaving there is. Nobody argues with you about an obvious failure; they bring casseroles. They argue about an eight, because an eight is visibly good and the missing part cannot be photographed.

Ask what in your life is currently at eight. Then ask the harder one, which is whether nine was ever actually on offer, or whether the possibility of it is the thing that has kept you here for three years.

What in your life is at eight, and was nine ever actually available?

  2. the figure

You followed the man. His back is to the cups and he is not hurrying.

The decision is already made. This card is about the walk: uphill, at night, alone, with the reasons that were so clear last week gone quiet and nobody to make the case to.

Nobody warns you about this part and nobody asks about it afterwards, because from outside the thing looks settled. If you have decided something recently, the card is not asking whether you were right. It is asking how you are doing on the walk, which is a different question, and you have not been asked it.

How are you doing on the walk, now that nobody is asking?

  3. the moon

The moon took your eye. A crescent laid over a full disc, with a face on it, looking down at him.

Somebody knows. The face does not approve and it does not intervene, and that combination is unsettling to stand under. It is also the most that can honestly be offered by anybody watching a decision that is not theirs to make.

You want more than that from someone at the moment. Work out what the more is before you ask for it, because permission tends to drop off the list the second it is said out loud, and what is left is usually just company.

Who is watching you leave, and what do you actually want from them?

  4. the staff

The staff is what you noticed: a stick cut for walking, brought along on purpose.

The difference between leaving and fleeing is preparation, and he packed. It is a small detail and it carries the card. Somebody who flees takes nothing, arrives with nothing, and has to go back, and the going back is worse than the staying would have been.

So the practical question about whatever you are walking away from is not whether you are sure. It is whether you have taken what you need, or whether this is being done at speed so that you cannot change your mind.

Have you taken what you need, or is this being done at speed so you cannot change your mind?

Its ten degrees

The Golden Dawn gave the Eight of Cups 0° to 10° of Pisces, ruled by Saturn, and Book T calls it the Lord of Abandoned Success. The Sun is in it from 18 February to 28 February. Power draw the Moon is on this card tonight. The decan page for this card.

The wheel runs on from here. The decan before this one is Seven of Swords, the Moon in Aquarius, 9 February to 18 February. The one after is Nine of Cups, Jupiter in Pisces, 28 February to 10 March. All thirty-six, in order.

On the Tree of Life, Book T puts the Eight of Cups on Hod, splendour, in Briah, the world of water: every eight is Hod, in its own suit's world. It is the eighth place in the Tree of Life spread.

Draw a card, and if this one turns, press whichever of these four you went to and the reading is written from there instead. Pulled it in a spread of your own? Read the whole spread here.
