Seven cups float in cloud, each holding something different: a head, a veiled figure lit from inside, a snake, a castle, jewels, a wreath hung over a skull, a dragon. Below them a man drawn as a black shape, one hand out.

Choice, fantasy, too many doors. The sharper fact is that the cups are in the air and nothing has been lifted down. You are not choosing between these yet. You are looking at them, which is a different afternoon and can be extended more or less indefinitely.

Four things people go to on this card

  1. the shrouded figure

You went to the covered one. It is lit from inside and the card will not show its face.

This is the option you want most and cannot describe, and it glows precisely because there is no detail in it. Every version you have of it is made of light and a feeling in the chest.

Put one specific thing into it, a salary, a town, a Tuesday morning, and some of the light goes out. That is not a trick. It is what happens when a wish becomes a plan. Whether you are willing to let it dim enough to be real is the actual decision here, and most people are not.

What would you have to name about it for it to stop glowing, and are you willing to?

  2. the castle

The castle caught you. Small, on a crag, sitting in a cup like a model of itself.

This is the buildable one. It has walls and a footprint and a rough cost, which makes it the most concrete thing on the shelf, and the picture has hung it in the same cloud as the dragon and the skull without comment.

Being possible is not the same as being chosen. A castle wants years, and the years have to come out of the same life as everything else in that cloud. What would you have to stop looking at long enough to lay a foundation?

What would you have to stop looking at in order to build it?

  3. the snake

You went to the snake. It comes up out of one of the cups, and the old readings call it wisdom or temptation and have never agreed.

Something on your list this week gets called a bad idea and then gets thought about again the same evening. That is this cup. The card takes no position on whether it is bad, and it does notice two things.

You are the one who put it up there. And the words you use when you dismiss it are not your words: they belong to a parent, or a colleague, or a version of yourself from eleven years ago. Say the sentence out loud and you will hear whose it is.

Whose words are you using when you call it a bad idea?

  4. the silhouette

You went past the cups to the man. A black shape with a hand out, no face, no clothes you could describe.

He is the only thing in the picture with no detail, which is the joke and also the diagnosis. Put seven options in front of a person and the person dissolves. Everything definite goes into the cups and nothing is left over for whoever is meant to be choosing.

The way out is not to rank the options. It is to make yourself specific: what you have time for, what you have already refused twice, what you would still want if nobody ever heard that you had chosen it.

Not which cup. What do you have time for, and what have you already refused twice?

Its ten degrees

The Golden Dawn gave the Seven of Cups 20° to 30° of Scorpio, ruled by Venus, and Book T calls it the Lord of Illusionary Success. The Sun is in it from 12 November to 22 November. The decan page for this card.

The wheel runs on from here. The decan before this one is Six of Cups, the Sun in Scorpio, 2 November to 12 November. The one after is Eight of Wands, Mercury in Sagittarius, 22 November to 2 December. All thirty-six, in order.

On the Tree of Life, Book T puts the Seven of Cups on Netzach, victory, in Briah, the world of water: every seven is Netzach, in its own suit's world. It is the seventh place in the Tree of Life spread.

Draw a card, and if this one turns, press whichever of these four you went to and the reading is written from there instead. Pulled it in a spread of your own? Read the whole spread here.
