A courtyard under an arch. An old man in a robe of grapes sits at the edge with his hand on a white dog, a couple stand talking, a child reaches for the second dog, and ten coins lie over the whole scene, held by nobody.

The person presumably responsible for all of it has only the dogs attending to him. That is not a sad picture. What you built is going to outlast your part in it, and the card counts that as the good outcome, whether or not you do.

Four things people go to on this card

  1. the old man

You went to the seated man. He is the only one sitting, he is on the edge of the group, and nobody in the picture is looking at him.

Inside something you built and no longer at the centre of it. The dogs are attending to him. The people are not. He does not seem to mind, and his hand is on the dog's head.

The card is generally read as the happy ending of the suit, and it puts the person who made it at the side of the frame. Somebody built the thing you are standing in, and the odds are that you have not addressed them in a while, because the thing works and they have gone quiet.

Who built the thing you are standing in, and when did you last address them?

  2. the dogs

You went to the dogs. Two white ones, and the child has a hand out to one of them.

The ordinary traffic of a household: the animals, the child, the small contact that nobody arranged. This is the part of a family that runs without management, and it is the only part of the picture in motion.

It is easy to miss because it is not an achievement. Something in your household is currently working entirely without you, and that, rather than the arch or the coins, is the wealth this card is about. You have not noticed it lately for the good reason that it did not need you to.

What in your household runs entirely without you, and when did you last notice it?

  3. the archway

The arch, and beyond it a whole built place: towers, a house, a courtyard, with the family standing under it.

Accumulation that has turned into a place. This is not money; it is walls. Somebody's decades became a building that other people now live in without thinking about it.

That is what the suit is for, and it is also what makes this card heavy. The thing is now big enough to have obligations attached to it. Whatever your work has turned into, it has stopped being only yours, and the people living inside it will not thank you for wanting it back.

What has your work turned into that now has obligations attached?

  4. the pattern

Ten pentacles lie over the whole scene, held by nobody, arranged rather than scattered.

The coins are laid over the family the way a diagram is laid over a room. Nobody in the picture is holding any of them. The wealth belongs to the situation rather than to a person, and that is a real distinction, because it decides who can spend it.

The test is who could actually spend what the household has. Usually the answer is nobody, or one person, and neither of those is what the arrangement was built for. You are inside a thing whose wealth is not anybody's, which is safe, and which is also why nothing in it can be changed quickly.

Does this belong to you, or to the situation, and who actually gets to spend it?

Its ten degrees

The Golden Dawn gave the Ten of Pentacles 20° to 30° of Virgo, ruled by Mercury, and Book T calls it the Lord of Wealth. The Sun is in it from 12 September to 23 September. The decan page for this card.

The wheel runs on from here. The decan before this one is Nine of Pentacles, Venus in Virgo, 2 September to 12 September. The one after is Two of Swords, the Moon in Libra, 23 September to 3 October. All thirty-six, in order.

On the Tree of Life, Book T puts the Ten of Pentacles on Malkuth, the kingdom, in Assiah, the world of earth: every ten is Malkuth, in its own suit's world. It is the tenth place in the Tree of Life spread.

Draw a card, and if this one turns, press whichever of these four you went to and the reading is written from there instead. Pulled it in a spread of your own? Read the whole spread here.
