Under a tree, arms folded, legs crossed, a young man looks down at three cups in the grass. A fourth is held out of a cloud at his eye level. He has not raised his eyes.

Nothing in this picture has gone wrong. That is the difficulty with it. The three cups have not failed, they have stopped registering, which is quieter and much harder to take to anybody for sympathy. Nothing has to have gone wrong for you to have stopped noticing it, and that is the uncomfortable part of where you are.

Four things people go to on this card

  1. the offered cup

The hand is what you noticed. Out of a cloud, a cup, held still at the height of his face.

The sting of this card is not that the offer is refused. It is that the offer is patient. Nothing here says it will be taken back if he sits until dusk, which removes the drama and leaves only the sitting.

What is being held at your eye level is usually something small and faintly embarrassing to accept: an invitation from somebody you find dull, a job under your title, an apology worded badly by a person who does not word things well. Small is not the same as beneath you.

What is being held out to you at eye level right now?

  2. the three cups

You counted the three. Standing, full, close enough to reach, and they are what he is looking at.

The old word for this is boredom, which sounds like a fault in him. The accurate word is habituation, which is a fact about nervous systems and happens to everybody who has ever liked anything for long enough.

The fix is not a fourth cup. It is ten minutes of proper attention paid to one of the three, and you already know which of yours has had the least of that lately. It is probably the one you would list first if somebody asked what you were lucky to have.

Which of the three would look different if you gave it ten minutes of proper attention?

  3. his folded arms

You went to the posture. Arms crossed, legs crossed, back against the trunk.

He is not refusing the cup. He is in a shape that cannot take it, which is different and much more common. The body settles into an attitude and then the attitude does the deciding, hours before anybody offers anything.

Whatever you turned down this week, check which one it was. A decision and a position feel identical from the inside, and the only reliable test is whether you can say in one sentence why. If the sentence does not come, it was the arms.

Did you decide to refuse that, or were you already sitting like this?

  4. the tree

You went to the tree. It is the only thing in the card he is touching, and it is holding him up.

He chose this shade. Nobody put him under it and there is no fence around him, and the thing sheltering him is also the thing keeping him seated, both at once, with no contradiction in it at all.

That is the true shape of most comfortable arrangements: a job, a town, a way of being in a family. Nothing here needs fixing this afternoon. But you picked the spot, which means the spot is a choice you make again every morning without noticing, and you could pick another one.

You picked this spot. Would you pick it again today?

Its ten degrees

The Golden Dawn gave the Four of Cups 20° to 30° of Cancer, ruled by the Moon, and Book T calls it the Lord of Blended Pleasure. The Sun is in it from 12 July to 23 July. Power draw Mars is on this card tonight. The decan page for this card.

The wheel runs on from here. The decan before this one is Three of Cups, Mercury in Cancer, 2 July to 12 July. The one after is Five of Wands, Saturn in Leo, 23 July to 2 August. All thirty-six, in order.

On the Tree of Life, Book T puts the Four of Cups on Chesed, mercy, in Briah, the world of water: every four is Chesed, in its own suit's world. It is the fourth place in the Tree of Life spread.

Draw a card, and if this one turns, press whichever of these four you went to and the reading is written from there instead. Pulled it in a spread of your own? Read the whole spread here.
