Three of Cups.
A ring small enough to see across.
Upright, then reversed, as Waite gave them in 1910.
Three women in a ring, cups up and touching at the top. The middle one is in red with her back to you. On the ground, a pumpkin, grapes, apples, more than they can eat.
Celebration, and the card is exact about the size of it. Three is the most people who can all look at each other at once, and a fourth puts somebody at somebody's back. Count the ones who would actually turn up for you. The number is smaller than your list and better than it.
Four things people go to on this card
- the three cups
You went to the cups. Three of them, met at the top, held by people who are not drinking.
A toast is not a drink. It is a sentence said in front of witnesses, after which a thing is true in a way it was not true that morning. The private version was already real to you. The public version is the one that changes what other people do next.
Something of yours is finished enough to say out loud. The card suspects you are waiting until it is finished enough to be beyond argument, which is a different and much later date.
What is finished enough to say out loud, and who would you say it to first?
- the fruit
The ground caught you. Pumpkin, grapes, apples, all of it down at their feet and none of it in anybody's hands.
Somebody grew this. A party in this suit is always downstream of a season that is no longer visible by the time the cups go up, and the fruit has been put on the floor where it can be stepped over.
Ask who did the growing and whether they are inside the ring. Sometimes the answer is a person you have not thanked in a way specific enough to be believed. Sometimes the answer is you, and you still have not let yourself sit down.
Who did the growing, and are they in the circle?
- the woman in red
The figure in red is where you stopped. The card gives you her shoulders and keeps her face.
There is a warm version of this card and there is a version that is exclusion, and the only thing separating them is which side of her back you are standing on. From inside, a closed circle is safety. From two steps away it is a wall with laughter behind it, and both readings are accurate depending on where you are this week.
You know which one it is. That answer usually arrives in about two seconds and then gets argued with for a fortnight.
Are you inside this group this week or outside it?
- their arms
You went to the shape they make. Arms crossing over arms, and the circle closes at the top.
Three people have to be in the same place to make this shape. None of it works remotely. The card is at its least mystical here and at its most practical: the ring is made of bodies that travelled, on a particular evening, to a particular garden, and somebody had to organise that.
Attendance is most of friendship in the end, and it is mostly logistics. When did you last actually turn up for one of these people, and what did you tell yourself instead?
When did you last actually turn up for the people in your ring?
Its ten degrees
The Golden Dawn gave the Three of Cups 10° to 20° of Cancer, ruled by Mercury, and Book T calls it the Lord of Abundance. The Sun is in it from 2 July to 12 July. The decan page for this card.
The wheel runs on from here. The decan before this one is Two of Cups, Venus in Cancer, 21 June to 2 July. The one after is Four of Cups, the Moon in Cancer, 12 July to 23 July. All thirty-six, in order.
On the Tree of Life, Book T puts the Three of Cups on Binah, understanding, in Briah, the world of water: every three is Binah, in its own suit's world. It is the third place in the Tree of Life spread.
Draw a card, and if this one turns, press whichever of these four you went to and the reading is written from there instead. Pulled it in a spread of your own? Read the whole spread here.
