King of Cups.
Steady on water, with no explanation offered.
Upright, then reversed, as Waite gave them in 1910.
His throne stands on a slab of stone in the sea. A cup in one hand, a short sceptre in the other, a fish on a chain at his throat. Something leaps clear of the water beside him. A ship sails past.
Mastery of feeling: the diplomat, the one who does not get swept. The picture is honest that the stone is unexplained and that nothing holding him up can be drawn. If you are the steady one in something at the moment, this card knows what that costs.
Four things people go to on this card
- the throne
You went to the base. He is on a stone slab in open water, it is not sinking, and the card offers no explanation.
It works and nobody can see why, including, on some days, him. That is the honest portrait of being the reliable person in a situation: everyone treats the steadiness as a property of you, like height, and nobody asks what it runs on.
If you are holding something together at the moment, the question the card puts is the one nobody around you will think to ask. What is actually holding you up, and when did you last put anything back into it?
You are the steady one. What is actually holding you up?
- the fish in the water
The leaping creature is what caught you. It comes clear of the water beside him and he does not turn his head.
His own suit breaks the surface in full view and he keeps facing forward. Whether that is mastery or suppression is the question the card is actually asking, and it declines to answer, because the answer depends on what happens later when nobody is watching.
There is a rough test. Mastery notices and then chooses; suppression does not notice at all. Something surfaced while you were being professional this month. Can you still say what it was, or did you manage not to see it?
What surfaced while you were being professional, and how long have you been not turning your head?
- the ship
You went to the ship. It is sailing on the same sea he is sitting on, under its own sail, entirely uninterested in him.
The sea is not personal. It carries the ship and it carries the throne with exactly the same lack of interest, and the ship has its own cargo and its own weather to think about.
Some of his steadiness comes from having understood that. Nothing out there is about him. It is bleak for about a minute and then it is a considerable relief, because a difficulty that is not personal is one you can put down at six o'clock. Yours is less about you than it currently feels.
What would change today if you accepted that none of it is about you?
- the fish at his neck
The amulet is where you stopped. He wears a fish on a chain at his throat, his own creature, made into an ornament in gold.
The living one is out in the water where he is not looking. The one he wears is metal, and it hangs at the place he speaks from.
That is what happens to a feeling carried long enough: it becomes a credential, a thing mentioned in order to be understood quickly. People do it with their worst year with surprising ease. It is not dishonest and it is not nothing. It is simply not the same as still feeling the thing, and you can tell the difference from inside.
What have you turned into a credential that you no longer actually feel?
On the Tree of Life, Book T puts the King of Cups on Chokmah, wisdom, in Briah, the world of water: the kings of all four suits sit there, one to a world. It is the second place in the Tree of Life spread.
Which zodiac signs does the King of Cups cover?
Twenty degrees of Aquarius to twenty degrees of Pisces: the last third of Aquarius and the first two thirds of Pisces, which the Sun crosses about 9 February to 10 March each year. Book T gives every king thirty degrees across two signs like this, which is why a court card belongs to no single sign. The three decans inside it are Seven of Swords · Eight of Cups · Nine of Cups, so a birth in any of them carries the King of Cups as well as its own card.
Draw a card, and if this one turns, press whichever of these four you went to and the reading is written from there instead. Pulled it in a spread of your own? Read the whole spread here.
